About the Sudbury Writers’ Guild

The first Sudbury Writers’ Guild meetings were held at an arts space in 1992 at the Grand Theatre provided by the city. (The space was provided by the Grand to offset property taxes. There were about 25 people at the first meeting, and some might still be Guild members.

After the Grand, the Guild moved to the Church of Epiphany offices on Larch Street, and then to the Parkside Centre (Older Adult Centre) at the YMCA before going to College Boreal.

The success of the Guild and its members led to the founding of Wordstock. The first festival and maybe the second were projects of the Sudbury Arts Council. Again, money for the first festival came from SAC.

The Guild is dedicated to inclusion and celebrating the love of writing. Anyone, regardless of where they are in their writing journey, is welcome. Monthly meetings are devoted to growing and learning craft. Meetings include industry speakers, critique nights, and book club. Members can also join monthly Inner Circles, break out groups focussed on certain genres or aspects of craft. Our Inner Circles include poetry, screen writing, as well as Write, Right! which meets online every Sunday morning, and is a gathering space simply to write.

Writing is a powerful medium. The Writer’s Guild community will guide you on your writing journey.
